Hearing the words “arrow quiver” may instantly make you think of Robinhood. It’s the touch that truly completes the iconic archer look. But whether looking like Robinhood appeals to you or not, a quiver offers the ultimate convenience.

An arrow quiver is a container that holds arrows on the person’s body, the bow, or on the ground. An arrow quiver is designed to store arrows within arm’s reach of the archer.

Although the appearance of quivers did not initially appeal to me, I grew weary of constantly having to carry my arrows around, placing them on the ground, and then having to readjust my position each time I wanted to shoot another arrow.

I’m able to carry around 30 arrows on my back, completely out of the way yet always within reach. I reach over my head with my right hand and grab the next arrow. I never even have to take my eyes off of the target while doing so.

Why opt for a shoulder quiver?
A shoulder quiver is the iconic archery accessory. It has been around since the early days of archery, and it is still around. Why? Because it is so simple and effective.

When shooting a bow, the archer is usually in a standing position. Since you draw the bowstring back each time you fire an arrow, grabbing an arrow from behind you is very intuitive. You typically use the same hand you draw the bow to reach and take an arrow from behind you.

Additionally, a shoulder quiver keeps the quiver and arrows out of your way at all times. This allows you to freely climb, hike or even stalk prey without your quiver every being in your way.

And lastly, a shoulder quiver is ideal if you want to carry around many arrows. I usually carry 20 to 30 arrows in my shoulder quiver since I only target shoot rather than hunt.

Why opt for a waist quiver?
Waist or hip quivers are commonly known as target quivers and are primarily used in competitions. The fletching on the arrows faces forward, and the tips point down towards the archer’s back, making it easy to identify arrows based on their fletching.

Why is this important? In competition archery, you may want to opt for a slightly stiffer or heavier arrow for certain distances. And a lighter and bendier arrow for another distance. In that case, having to reach behind your back to sort through your arrows doesn’t make sense.

Does that mean that a waist quiver is only meant for competition shooting? Not at all. Some people prefer the style or look a hip quiver offers.
