Best Online Shopping Apps in the United States
Shopping online from an app is becoming more and more popular. People love it because everything is more streamlined, faster, and more convenient.
Retailers love it because users convert 3 times better on an app, compared to a mobile website. Additionally, customers are more likely to become repeat buyers.
Sounds like a win-win. Let’s dive in. Each app listed here is tried and proven, and free!
1. Walmart
The Walmart app has truly begun to shine in late 2019, early 2020. About 46% of iPhone users use the Walmart App. Why? Groceries! We all need them, and Walmart has made it extremely easy to get them. Once you place your first order, Walmart will begin keeping track of the groceries you buy. This makes future shopping even easier. It’ll even ask and suggest products you frequently purchase.
Once you have a grocery order placed, you can get it delivered for $10. However, like Amazon Prime, Walmart has it’s own subscription feature, called Delivery Unlimited. At $12.95/month, you can get groceries delivered, to your house, for free.
If you don’t mind the drive to Walmart, you can pick-up your groceries for free. Walmart will actually bring the groceries out and load them in your car once you check-in from the app. Talk about convenience!
2. eBay
Unlike what many people believe, eBay is still an immensely popular app. About one in three iPhone users has the app installed on their phone. While eBay sells millions of new products, just like Amazon, they mainly shine when it comes to used products.
In a way, it’s the largest online flea market. It’s the perfect place to buy a used or refurbished iPad (over 20 Apple iPad 2’s were sold per day, for an average of $74.99 per unit). Maybe you like saving money on clothing? Buy them used, for a fraction of the cost. Whatever you’re looking for, you can probably find it on eBay.
3. Ibotta
People in the United States love to shop. What they love, even more, is saving money while they shop! Ibotta is the leading cashback app on the app market. A whopping 1 in 4 iPhone owners uses Ibotta. You can earn cash back on just about anything. Whether you buy a product through the app or scan your grocery receipt, you’re getting cash back.
While there are extreme cases of users saying they got $3,000 or even $13,000 of total cashback from Ibotta, the average user gets about $20 in cashback a month. While not nearly as impressive, that’s still $240 a year on average!
4. Etsy
Just under 1 in 5 iPhone users, or 17%, owns the Etsy app. That’s pretty impressive, considering Etsy mainly focuses on unique and handcrafted items. If you’re looking for unique items, and prefer supporting the “small people” rather than big corporations, you have to check out Etsy.
What can you buy on Etsy? Anything. Think custom jewelry or a personalized wallet. No? How about a handcrafted toy? Perhaps you’re in need of wedding supplies. Whatever you’re looking for, you can probably find a unique version of it on Etsy.
5. Kroger
Circling back to the online grocery shopping type of ads, Kroger relatively works the same as Walmart. You can shop for groceries online, including alcohol products, and then pick up the groceries or get them delivered. They do have a different selection of products. When COVID-19 first hit, my husband and I rotated between Kroger and Walmart. They’re basically the only two grocery chains we have around here in Kentucky. But it allowed us to get different products.
A neat feature that Kroger offers, that Walmart lacks, are recipes. There are hundreds of recipes available on the Kroger app, and you guessed it, you can add the required groceries directly from the recipe! It’s a great way to get inspiration for a new dish, and conveniently shop the required groceries at the same time.
6. Wish
If you like to bargain shop, and don’t mind waiting for a product to arrive, Wish could be a perfect shopping app for you. It features thousands of products. Most products are brandless as they are typically sold directly by the manufacturer. Sometimes, though, that translates to a lower quality product, too. However, 14.8% of Apple users have the app installed on their phone, which is pretty impressive.
Aside from cheap prices on items, Wish also has various promotions running constantly. For example, you could get a product 50% off if you buy 2 or more different items. Or free shipping. Or a free product. Honestly, there’s probably no other store that runs as many promotions as Wish does.

7. Craigslist
Wait, Craigslist still exists? Yes, that’s right. The no-frills website from the ’90s is still alive and kicking. About 1 in 10 Apple users have the app installed on their phone, which I found very surprising. The usage has decreased ever since Facebook has released its marketplace function. Honestly, I would probably use Facebook Marketplace over craigslist. The main reason being, you get some idea of the person you’re talking to. Be it based on their profile photo, or other photos they’ve shared. With Craigslist, literally everything is anonymous, so you have no clue who you’re dealing with.
That being said, Craigslist is still the place to go for millions of people to find anything from used items to adopting pets.
8. OfferUp
Not a fan of Facebook, or Craigslist? There’s a yard sale type app for you, called OfferUp. It allows you to list things locally in a breeze. Be it a piece of furniture, an electronic, or even a toy that hasn’t been played with for years. Take a photo, list it on OfferUp, and depending on where you live, you could probably sell it within a few hours.
9. The Home Depot
More and more individuals are starting to DIY, and The Home Depot is the leading home improvement store in the world. And you can tell. Aside from the thousands of products they offer, their website and app just look and feels right. They also don’t want to just sell you tools and materials, they like to inspire people on how to tackle projects themselves.
Just take a look at their blog, you’re more than likely to find a DIY project that will interest you.
10. Groupon
As we previously mentioned, people like to save money. With Ibotta being the #1 app for cash back, Groupon is the #1 app for coupons. Since it was launched in 2008, it went from virtually no users to over 10 million users in just 2 years. Today, over 50 million people use Groupon and it has helped consumers save over $35 billion dollars. That’s a lot of money.
So what can you get on Groupon? Anything from savings on new merchandise, to discounts at local stores and activities. Do you get your nails done often? Buy a Groupon coupon, and you’re likely to save 20% to 50%. But it doesn’t stop there, you could even book an international trip at a fraction of the price using Groupon.
11. DoorDash
Is ordering food a type of shopping? I’m not sure, but I do know I love DoorDash! And so, it made it on the list. Nothing made Pizza night as comforting and relaxing as it was, due to the Pizza being delivered. With DoorDash, you could replace the Pizza in Pizza night with just about anything you want.
When you place a food order through DoorDash, a registered DoorDash driver will pick-up your order and deliver it to your home, or place of employment. DoorDash has really nailed down their process too. You can track the driver in realtime on the app, and they usually arrive at the place of pick up before the order is ready!
Haven’t tried DoorDash yet? Use this link to sign up, and get $5 off your first 3 orders!
12. Poshmark
A few apps that made it on this list have been about shopping for used items. Poshmark is the leading used-clothing app in the world! It’s similar to eBay, in a sense. Just about anyone can sign up and list their clothing for sale. As you sell clothing, buyers will leave reviews. So you will have some sense of the overall quality before you make a purchase.
So the next time you feel like your closet could use a clean-up, be sure to check out Poshmark, and list that unwanted clothing for sale!
13. ThredUp
Staying on the used clothing topic, ThredUp is the leading (perhaps the only?) online thrift store in the world. With over 35,000 brands available, you’re likely to find a new favorite piece of clothing at a discounted price. Additionally, you’ll receive 10% off if you purchase 2 or more items at the same time.
14. Instacart
Remember we talked about the Kroger app and their online grocery shopping? As of 2020, Instacart takes care of all Kroger grocery deliveries. But Instacart delivers more than Kroger, oh yes. Here are a couple of other big names that Instacart will shop and deliver to your door. Publix, Aldi’s, Sam’s Club, ABC’s Fine Wine & Spirits, Target, Big Lots, Petco, and many more.
15. Shop
Shop, previously known as Arrive is a relatively new app. But it has gained immense popularity. One of the reasons, it’s made by Shopify. Shopify, based in Canada, is the leading DIY eCommerce platform. So what is the Shop app about? You can’t exactly buy anything on Shop.
Shop has one purpose, to notify you of packages on the way. And it does it very well! Sure, you can track a package with UPS, FedEx or USPS. But let’s be honest, if you get a lot of packages delivered, tracking them on 3 different platforms, or on each shop app, can be a hassle.
One of the reasons why Shopify is the #1 eCommerce platform, is its User Interface, and User Experience (UI/UX). The design team at Shopify did a wonderful job designing the Shop app as well. It’s one of the reasons why this jumped to #1 on the list of package tracking apps, and #4 on the list of shopping apps (as of the time this article was written).
16. Wayfair
Wayfair is similar to Ikea. The difference? Ikea designs and makes its own furniture and home goods. You can visit one of their massive warehouses to get ideas and shop thousands of products. Wayfair on the other hand operates entirely online. It also offers over 8,000 brands. This makes it extremely easy to find anything in the color or style you’re looking for.
Additionally, Wayfair has excellent support. A piece missing? Something damaged? They will make it right. I’ve personally shopped Wayfair multiple times. We had bought our first home, and were in need of multiple pieces of furniture. Not only did we find the style we wanted easily on Wayfair, but most of the items we bought were also excellently priced.
Unfortunately, though, a tv stand had a piece missing. And our bedframe had some scuffs and marks on it. So I called Wayfair and let them know. How did they make it right? They sent a new TV stand and refunded the bedframe entirely. WOW! Talk about keeping doing everything you possibly can to keep a customer.
So the next time you need a new piece of furniture, and the local furniture store doesn’t have what you need, be sure to check Wayfair. I have no doubt you will find what you’re looking for! Also, keep an eye out on Wayfair’s deals. Usually, you can land an amazing deal. The hard part is not buying something you don’t really need!
17. Chewy
If you are a fur-parent, or you are thinking of getting that puppy your kids have been begging for, you need to check out Chewy. Sure, you can buy dog food, toys and other pet supplies from a dozen different places, including Amazon. But Chewy is tailored to pet supplies. Additionally, Chewy just looks and feels great to shop on!
The story behind Chewy is an interesting one. It was founded as an upstart online store by a 25-year-old entrepreneur. Fast forward 5 years and things like 24/7 support and free shipping helped Chewy reach $1 billion in sales. Chewy has since been acquired by PetSmart for $3 billion dollars. PetSmart however, hardly changed anything at all when it comes to Chewy. Why mess with something that became successful in an industry, led by giants?
18. Carvana
Ever thought we would get to the point where you can buy a vehicle from your couch? Carvana is on a fast-track to becoming a new standard in shopping for used vehicles. In 2018, they sold just under 100,000 vehicles, entirely online. In 2019, they were able to lift that number to 177,549, making them the largest online car dealership in the world.
I get what you may be thinking. Buying a vehicle online isn’t exactly like buying a pet bed, or a piece of furniture. But in an online world, where you can get groceries or even a mortgage online, buying a vehicle sight-unseen is just another thing we can adapt to, right?
To ease your anxiety, Carvana offers a “love it or return it” guarantee. No matter what vehicle you purchase, you get a 1-week test drive. That’s right, not a drive around the block with a salesman in the back of the car. 1 entire week of doing groceries, driving to work, heck you could even take it on a road trip. Don’t love it? Send it back and get a different vehicle delivered, right to your door. Additionally, every vehicle on Carvana is accident-free.
So what about your current vehicle? Carvana’s got you covered. You can trade it in for top dollar. You don’t even have to buy a vehicle to sell your vehicle!
In short, if you rather get a tooth pulled than going to a local dealership, Carvana is the answer to your prayers.
19. Newegg
If you’re into tech, Newegg is made for you. From laptops to TVs, and computer hardware, and much more. Newegg has it, and they offer a lowest-price-guarantee on everything. Additionally, they have daily promotions to get the best deal on tech.
With millions of products and reviews, Newegg makes it easy to research, compare, and shop, all in one. They also shine when it comes to customer support, available 24/7, in 9 different languages.
