G Fuel is advertised as a healthier energy drink. But is it? Let's take a closer look at the ingredients.
G Fuel is advertised as a healthier energy drink. But is it? Let's take a closer look at the ingredients.
G Fuel is heavily advertised as both the official E-Sports drink and a healthy alternative to energy drinks. But we all know advertisements should be taken with a grain of salt. Let’s take a closer look at the ingredients, and what they do exactly.
The label above is for Fazeberry, one of G Fuel’s top sellers and our favorite flavor. While the ingredients change a bit per flavor, overall, they are very similar.
Let’s take a closer look:
Amount: 15
Calories explained:
Calories are pretty straightforward. They are a measuring unit people use as a guide to maintain, gain or lose weight. If you want to learn more about calories, Verywellfit does a wonderful job explaining calories in depth!
Sugar-free energy drinks typically have lower calories. But G Fuel still contains fewer calories than, say, a sugar-free Red Bull (20 calories).
Amount: 3g (1% DV)
Carbohydrates explained:
Carbohydrates are sugars, fibers, and starches, commonly found in fruits, vegetables, and grains. Carbohydrates provide energy, and the body naturally relies on carbs to stay healthy.
While carbs are good for your body and health, too many carbs aren’t. So it’s not surprising that G Fuel limited the number of carbs in their drinks.
Amount: 250mg (417% DV)
Vitamin C explained:
Vitamin C has several important functions. Vitamin C may reduce heart disease risk, manage high blood pressure, prevent iron deficiency, boost immunity, and more.
If the 417% Daily Value scares you, don’t worry. While for adults, 60 to 90mg is the recommended daily amount, the upper limit is 2,000mg per day. Exceeding this daily recommended value may lead to diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, and some other conditions. Learn more about consuming too much Vitamin C on Mayo clinic’s website.
Amount: 15IU (50% DV)
Vitamin E explained:
Vitamin E is a nutrient that’s important to vision, reproduction, and the health of your blood, brain, skin, and perhaps most importantly for, in G Fuel’s case, your brain.
While consuming too many vitamins usually isn’t a serious concern, that’s different for Vitamin E. Too much vitamin E, especially in unhealthy individuals, can cause a wide variety of health problems, even death. You can read more about these risks at Mayo clinic.
50 IU of vitamin E (contents of Fazeberry serving) is roughly 36mg. According to the National Center of Biotechnology, most of these severe symptoms are not noticed unless users consume 300mg to 1,000mg daily.
Amount: 15mg (75% DV)
Niacin explained:
Niacin is a B vitamin that’s made and used by your body to turn food into energy. Additionally, niacin helps keep your nervous system healthy. So G Fuel likely added this vitamin for enhanced energy and focus.
Niacin is generally safe. But, like with most vitamins, too much is never good. However, serious side effects are most likely for niacin if you take between 2,000 to 6,000 mg a day.
G Fuel’s 15mg amount is well below dangerous levels, even if the daily value amount states 75%.
Amount: 10mg (500% DV)
Vitamin B6 explained:
Vitamin B6 is another vitamin that focuses on overall brain health. Additionally, it helps promote your mood and decrease depression. Perhaps ideal for the rage-quitting gamer? 😅 Thanks, G Fuel!
Furthermore, vitamin B6 helps prevent cancer, prevent clogged arteries, and prevent heart disease. Wow, that’s quite a list of benefits.
The 500% daily value amount may be alarming. Healthline reports, “Taking more than 1,000 mg of supplemental B6 a day may cause nerve damage and pain or numbness in the hands or feet. Some of these side effects have even been documented after just 100–300 mg of B6 per day. For these reasons, the tolerable upper limit of vitamin B6 is 100 mg per day for adults“.
In other words, yes, G Fuel contains more than the recommended daily value of Vitamin B6. But 10mg is still 10 times less than the tolerable upper limit.
That being said, if you take other supplements or are eating a specific diet, you’ll want to make sure you are not surpassing this limit.
Amount: 10mcg
Vitamin B12 explained:
Vitamin B12 has a wide array of positive effects. But most importantly, in G Fuel’s case, it helps prevent a type of anemia called megaloblastic anemia that makes people tired and weak. It also is proven to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression.
So again, it helps with focus, overall mood, and energy. Starting to catch a trend here?
Since B12 is generally considered safe, even at high doses, no Tolerable Upper Intake Level (UL) has been established for B12 due to its low toxicity level.
Amount: 79mg (3% DV)
Sodium explained:
Sodium is salt. And while the right amount of salt is important for your health, it’s likely that G Fuel only added this for taste.
Most individuals meet or exceed the daily recommended value of sodium naturally. But since the amount of sodium is so small, there is nothing to worry about here.
In addition to the above-mentioned ingredients, G Fuel contains more complex formulas that consist of various ingredients.
G Fuel’s energy complex consists of:
Taurine is shown to offer various health benefits and is even called a “wonder molecule.” Most energy drinks contain taurine.
Taurine mainly has a positive impact on your brain and calming the nervous system. Taurine has no known side effects when taken in reasonable doses.
L-Citrulline Malate improves blood flow throughout your body by relaxing your arteries. Research suggests an improvement in power output, a reduction in fatigue, and improved endurance.
A serving of GFuel contains 140mg of caffeine. That’s roughly the same amount of caffeine found in 1 and a half-cup (12 ounces) of coffee. As it is well-known, caffeine is mainly consumed for enhanced energy and focus.
Other energy drinks and energy shots often contain as much as 300mg of caffeine. But that doesn’t mean G Fuel doesn’t deliver as much energy. Instead of just caffeine, G Fuel focuses on various other ingredients that naturally enhance energy and focus.
Glucuronolactone is a common energy drink ingredient. It is mainly used to increase energy levels and improve alertness. Let’s face it, increased energy and alertness sounds like a match made in heaving as far as gaming goes.
As scary as this ingredient may sound, it occurs naturally in your body, produced by your kidneys and liver.
Like most ingredients found in G Fuel, N-Acetyl-L-Carnitine HCI has been shown to treat Alzheimer’s disease, high blood sugar, depression, and more. But more importantly, in G Fuel’s case, it helps boost energy.
G Fuel’s focus complex consists of:
Tyrosine is used to improve alertness, attention, and focus. It produces important brain chemicals that help nerve cells communicate and may even regulate mood.
Choline Bitartrate offers various health benefits and serves various body functions. It is similar to vitamin B, which your liver and kidneys create.
Another amino acid, N-Acetyl-L-Tyrosine, helps regulate your reward and pleasure centers. It’s likely G Fuel added this ingredient as it also helps with memory and motor skills. After all, motor skills and muscle memory are what separate professionals gamers from the average occasional gamer.
Adenosine 5′-triphosphate (ATP) is a central component of energy storage. It acts as an energy that is stored away until you need it. This helps focus during those crucial moments in the game without feeling too energized when there’s nothing really going on.
G Fuel’s antioxidant complex consists of nearly 2 dozen ingredients. To save you the hassle of reading each one, they all consist of fruit powders and extracts—Pomegranate fruit extract, pineapple fruit powder, apple fruit powder, to name a few.
Fruit powders and extracts are quite popular and expensive. There is no doubt that this makes up part of G Fuel’s price.
After going through every single ingredient found in G Fuel, it becomes clear that G Fuel is indeed a healthy alternative to other energy drinks.
It contains various ingredients that help focus, brain function, motor skills, even improve mood and depression.
There is nothing dangerous in G Fuel. Yes, it contains traces of lead, but these traces aren’t dangerous levels, as we spoke about in a separate article. And traces of lead can be found in thousands of foods and ingredients. Virtually anything that grows roots in soil will contain lead.
The only dangerous aspect of GFuel can be the higher than the recommended amount of certain vitamins, especially vitamin E.
But as previously mentioned, this only really becomes a concern if you consume multiple G Fuel servings a day, OR if you take various supplements or follow a specific diet rich in these vitamins.
So, enjoy that G Fuel, but do so in moderation. One a day, and you should be fine!
