Gun Socks: Protect Your Firearm from Scratches, Dings and Moisture
What is a gun sock?
When I first heard about a gun sock not too long ago, I didn’t have a clue what to expect. So if you’re not sure about what a gun sock is or what the benefits are, don’t blame yourself!
Simply put, a gun sock is a protective sleeve for your firearm. This sleeve can protect your gun from scratches, dings, dust, even rust! Sure, it doesn’t provide the same protection as a hard case, but it has its own unique benefits.
Benefits of a gun sock
When transporting a firearm outside of a case, a gun sock is a great option. It will protect your firearm from dust and other debris. Additionally, transporting a firearm in a sleeve is much less noticeable and alarming to bystanders.
If you store your guns in a safe, scratches and dings can happen. A gun sleeve will act as an additional coating of protection.
I personally store some firearms in my closet. Not ideal, I know. But we don’t have children running around the house, so it’s not much of a concern. Additionally, I keep them unloaded and store the magazines elsewhere.
But, when digging through my closet, sometimes they bump into each other. So, I got a gun sock for each firearm (except for my 12 gauge). This eliminates me from worrying that they will get scratched or dinged so easily.
Gun socks are usually made from a stretchy material, more about what they’re made of next. While this is convenient as just about any gun will fit easily in the sleeve, it also gives added protection to the attachments.
What is a gun sock made of?
Gun socks are typically made from polyester materials. Polyester will not negatively affect wood, plastic, or metal. Additionally, Polyester is stretchy, so even if the gun is slightly larger than the sleeve, it will fit. Even attachments aren’t much of a problem.
Some gun socks are treated with silicone. While polyester is already moisture-wicking, the silicone treatment helps keep your guns dry and fight off any chance of rust.

While new to me, gun socks and sleeves have been around for a while and are widely available. I personally purchased this 2-pack on Amazon. They are the gun socks in the photos throughout this article.

When I first purchased these gun sleeves (it’s a 2-pack), I wasn’t sure what to expect. An oversized sock you can fit your gun in? I guess we’ll see. But I must say, I am very impressed by the overall quality and feel. Especially for the price of just $17! Did I mention it’s a 2 pack?!
Prices do change on Amazon, though, but if you can snag one of these 2-packs up for $20 or less, I’d say you got a great buy!
This silicone-treated polyester fabric is super stretchy, comfortable to the touch, and thick enough for added peace of mind. I tried it on my AR-15 with handgrip and sight, and it fit like a glove. Then I tried it with a .22lr rifle. No problem.
