What do gel blasters shoot?
Gel blasters fire rounds made of a super-absorbent polymer called sodium polyacrylate, which can expand up to 100 to 1000 times its original size upon absorbing water. This material is approved by the FDA as a safe food additive and is non-toxic, so there’s no need for concern if a few gel balls are ingested by children or pets.
To prepare the gel balls for use, simply soak them in water for at least 4 hours. While warm water will cause the gel balls to expand more quickly, it’s important to monitor the soaking process to ensure they don’t expand too much. With a little practice, finding the perfect size for your gel balls will become a breeze.
Why are my gel balls breaking/exploding?
Using your Orbeez gel blaster for the first time can be frustrating if the gel balls break upon firing within the gun or rifle. Unfortunately, I experienced this disappointment myself on my initial try. While it may be tempting to attribute the issue to the gel blaster, the reality is that the problem is often with the gel balls themselves.
The most common reason for gel balls to break upon firing are:
- Improper soaking: they didn’t soak long enough, or they soaked for too long and are too large
- They are too old: if you prepared a batch of gel balls but put them aside for weeks or months, they likely lost much of their functionality. They may have soaked – or lost too much water over time. Try a new batch and see if that works better.
- They are of poor quality: gel balls have different qualities. The best are made from mostly sodium polyacrylate. Cheaper gel balls may consist less of this or are made from another poorer quality ingredient.
When you’ve made a few batches and let them soak appropriately for 4-6 hours in warm water, and they are just not performing right, try purchasing these top-rated gellets instead. Perhaps your gel blaster just came with lower-quality gel balls.
